Why Mentoring Matters
Young Glasgow Talent, developed by MCR Pathways, is helping young people find, grow and use their talent in Glasgow.
Our volunteer mentors spend one hour a week listening to and encouraging their young person. The only qualification you need to be a mentor is the desire to help. Young people are matched with a mentor based on their personalities, interests and career aspirations. All young people are different and have different needs, so it’s important that our mentors come from all walks of life.
Role models make a life-changing difference to young people. Additionally, mentoring has been shown to make a powerful and positive impact on those who give their time and support.

The best thing I got out of mentoring was I believe in myself a lot more.
My mentor really took it into consideration what I liked, my dislikes, what I was interested, what I wanted to be and what I wanted to do with my life. She pushed me forward in doing that because she knew I wasn't very confident, she knew that I didn't really believe in myself and that I didn't really have anyone else pushing me. She took me to open days at universities and colleges. I've always wanted to be a lawyer, but felt like I wasn't good enough to be a lawyer, she was like 'No, you are doing it, you can do this!'

I’ve learned that you can help young people just by being there and listening. You don’t need to have all the answers but as long as you show care and respect it, it will work both ways. I’ve been with my young person for over a year now and, as the new term has started, we are working towards my young person excelling in 4th year and getting good results.

I became an MCR mentor in August 2019. I was apprehensive and hoped that I would be able to
bring value to the role and to my young mentee. I schedule our weekly meetings in advance and find
that I can fit them in easily within my work commitments.
I find myself smiling every time I arrive at school, as I really look forward to chatting with my
mentee! If our relationship can make a small difference in my mentee’s life
and help positively shape her future, I will be delighted and feel genuinely honoured to be able to
share this journey with her.
