Meet Our Mentor – Rosanna Moore!

It’s Volunteer Week!

As part of the nation-wide #volunteersweek campaign we’re delighted to showcase Young Glasgow Talent’s amazing volunteers.

Today we’re meeting our dedicated mentor, Rosanna Moore.

Our fabulous mentors are making life-changing differences to Glasgow’s disadvantaged young people. Our city’s young people are disadvantaged through no fault of their own. Our mentors help them find, grow and use their talents.

We really can’t celebrate them enough! So this week we’re letting you get up close and personal with them. Find out what makes them tick and learn more becoming a part of our amazing community!

Full Name: Rosanna Moore
Mentoring School: Springburn Academy
Length of Time Mentoring: 7 months

Q1: What first inspired you to get involved in our YGT mentoring programme?
I heard about MCR through the widening access team at my University, Strathclyde. Once I’d looked at your website and learned a bit more about what MCR do, I decided it was definitely something I’d like to pursue. As a care leaver myself I remember how invaluable my mentor was and this is my first opportunity to ‘give back’.

Q2: How was your very first meeting with your young person?
Daunting – I was very nervous. I was only a teenager a few years ago myself and remember how judgemental they can be. I wasn’t sure if they’d like me, want me to be their mentor etc. But within minutes I felt at ease with my young person. We just clicked.

Q3: How much have you seen your young person grow and develop since that first meeting?
Her attendance has improved and her self belief, confidence and motivation has increased weekly before me. She now has a goal, to reach university, and is motivated to get there.

Q4: With your support and with your young person’s motivation, commitment and resilience, what stage has your mentee now reached in their journey?
She is just finishing up her exams at the end of S4 and has just picked her subjects.

Q5: How unique has this experience been for you? How rewarding has it been to see your mentee grow and develop under your invaluable support?
I’m loving this experience. The bond I have with my YP is genuine and trusting. She reminds me so much of what I was like at her age, and watching her confidence and motivation grow week by week means the world to me.

Q6: What has been the major highlight of your experience so far with your young person?
Getting to the stage where she trusts me and is comfortable to tell me her fears, concerns and more, I feel at ease asking her questions now.

Q7: What would you say to someone that has been inspired by our amazing community and is looking to get involved in the YGT programme?
Most definitely join up! It is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done in my life. As a 23 year old care leaver myself who had (and still has) my own mentor, the difference someone like that can make is invaluable.
