“Life felt overwhelmingly heavy.” That’s how Sam describes their world before MCR Pathways. Juggling the immense responsibility of being a young carer for their parents and siblings, battling a chronic health condition, and enduring relentless bullying for their gender identity, school was a constant source of struggle and sadness. Sam rarely smiled. But in their mentor, Lee, Sam found a sanctuary. Lee’s big, welcoming smile created an immediate safe space. Their weekly meetings weren’t just about academics; they read books together, shared artwork, and even practiced magic tricks—simple human connections that allowed Sam to finally open up about the serious stuff. Lee’s guidance was a powerful lifeline: “Be yourself,” and “don’t listen to the bullies, they’re wasting their time.” This unwavering support helped Sam transform their daily life and build a strong, positive routine. “It really helped me get my confidence back and get my smile back.” says Sam.
