Sam was referred to MCR Pathways as he was at risk of having social worker involvement. Initially, Sam turned down support feeling like it was something he didn’t need.
Sam's new trajectory
However, Sam recognised that he was struggling with exceptional circumstances in his home-life, and because his brother had spoken highly of mentoring, Sam decided it could be something positive. Sam didn’t have a lot of requirements for his mentor, seeking just ‘a male mentor who would be up for having a laugh’.
Sam was matched with Derek, a university employee whom he had a great connection with. By providing consistent support, Derek enabled Sam to process his feelings and overcome the low confidence that defined their early interactions. Their discussions quickly changed Max’s outlook on his future, showing him how he could change his behaviour and make better choices.
Sam’s confidence improved tenfold, transitioning him from a difficult start to becoming a responsible young man who can clearly keep his head high. Sam’s overall behaviour improved significantly throughout his last year and successfully secured a place at College to study Game Design.
Sam is feeling positive about his future, and his confidence has visibly improved. This is noticeable both when he is walking around school and through his positive interactions with staff and peers in his year group.
Derek, Sam's Mentor
Derek committed to being the trusted, non-judgemental adult who provided the stability Sam required. He used his own background and professional networks at the University of Hertfordshire to inspire Sam about his future choices.
Sam’s success is a testament to the mutually enriching relationship, demonstrating the power of volunteering to build social capital and provide the essential life skills young people need to overcome systemic barriers.
We are deeply committed to protecting the identities of the young people MCR Pathways supports through the power of mentoring. That’s why we have changed names and used imagery that does not feature the individuals who shared their stories.
