Thank you so much for starting your mentor journey. One where you can ensure a young person is defined by their talents and not their circumstances.

To register please watch the 10 minute video below and complete the short form. This information helps us get to know you and, if you decide to proceed, it will help us match you with a young person.

After we receive your registration, you’ll be invited to a 1:1 conversation with one of our team. This is a great opportunity for us to chat and build your matching profile. It should take no longer than an hour. We will send you a short questionnaire on your interests and hobbies to complete beforehand.

As part of our application process, we require you to complete a PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) in Scotland or a DBS (Disclosure & Barring Service) check in England, for which we will cover the cost.
Additionally, as someone who has lived outside of the UK in the last 5 years, we will need you to provide a criminal record check from the country you resided in for the time that you were there. These checks vary from country to country in terms of cost and time to process so please investigate this before continuing.

Understanding the Mentor Volunteer Role

Overview:

MCR Pathways is dedicated to empowering young people through our school based mentoring programme, guiding them towards achieving an equality of educational outcomes, career opportunities and life chances. Our mentors provide one-to-one support that encourages confidence, resilience, and academic success.

Key Responsibilities:

Consistently Meet with Mentee: Engage in regular weekly sessions throughout the school year to foster a stable mentoring relationship. These meetings will take place during the school year.

Effective Communication: Be clear and transparent to build a trusting relationship to guide and inspire your mentee. Utilise clear and impactful communication to discuss, guide, and inspire your mentee.

Empathetic Interaction: Demonstrate sensitivity and empathy in all interactions, responding to the mentee’s needs with understanding and support.

Build Trust and Positivity: Create a supportive environment that encourages the mentee’s personal and educational growth.

Essential Requirements:

Time Commitment: Ability to commit at least one hour per week during the school day and term.

Consistency & Reliability: Demonstrated reliability in previous commitments, underscoring the ability to maintain a steady and dependable presence.

Clear Communication and Listening Skills: Ability in both expressing ideas clearly and listening actively to understand others’ viewpoints.

Sensitivity & Empathy: Natural ability and desire to connect with others emotionally and an understanding of diverse personal backgrounds.

Non-judgmental Attitude: A fundamental approach of openness and acceptance in all interactions.

Understanding of MCR Pathways: Knowledge of the MCR Pathways’ mission and values, and how they translate into the role of a mentor.

Desirable Skills & Experience:

Previous Mentoring or Coaching Experience: Prior experience in roles involving youth mentoring, coaching, or educational support is advantageous but not required. This does not have to be in a formal capacity – examples can be previous volunteering, your role as a parent, carer or family member or supporting colleagues in the workplace.

Mentoring takes place during the school day and requires a commitment of 1 hour a week to visit your young person in school, term time only, throughout the academic year. While this is a voluntary post, we have a duty of care to all the young people that we work with to ensure that applicants are suitable to work with children. This means that we will require a protection of vulnerable groups check. Please note that the nature of mentoring and the mentoring relationship means that the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 does not apply. This means that you will have to declare all convictions. To enable us to provide you with the right advice, we ask that you state any convictions that you have in this form. This will include minor traffic offences. This information will be treated in confidence.
