Volunteer Mentors Needed For Innovative Fife Pilot Programme

20 February 2026

Volunteer for just one hour a week and help change a young person’s future in Fife.

MCR Pathways is calling on adults across Fife to step forward as volunteer mentors and support local young people through an exciting innovative new pilot programme.

Delivered in partnership with Fife Council and Fife Education’s Destinations and Developing the Young Workforce (DYW), the programme places a trusted adult mentor at the heart of each young person’s journey.

The programme will support young people to overcome unique challenges to staying on at school, gaining qualifications and moving on to positive post-school destinations.

Volunteer mentors are urgently required to support three key initiatives across the region

My Future Plan
Supporting S4 learners furthest from achievement or a positive destination, and S5 learners disengaging from their current curriculum, but not ready to leave school. Young people will explore pathways in leadership development, volunteering opportunities, work experience, personal and social development.

Participating schools – Inverkeithing High School, Levenmouth Academy, Queen Anne High School, Bell Baxter High School and Glenrothes High School.

Mock Interviews
Participate on interview panels to prepare S4, S5 and/or S6 learners for valuable next steps by building confidence, communication skills, and understanding of real interview expectations.

The programme will provide feedback to learners on how to build on their strengths, provide optional follow-up coaching and links to employers, colleges and apprenticeships.

Participating schools – Viewforth High School, St Columba’s RC High School and Kirkcaldy High School.

My Future Pathway
Supporting ‘at risk’ S5/S6 Winter Leavers to engage with education, employment or training. It’s about supported transition and scaffolded vocational learning leading to several pathways. That can include college, apprenticeships, employment, further training or volunteering.

Participating schools will be confirmed soon.

MCR Pathways welcomes mentors from all walks of life. Full training and ongoing support are provided, enabling volunteers to use life experience and personal qualities to make a real difference.

This opportunity is open to everyone who has already signed up and is waiting to be matched. Existing mentors are warmly encouraged to share this opportunity with friends, family, workplaces and their local communities.

“Everyday, together, with our partners, we see the real benefits of the power of personalised relationship based mentoring across Scotland. That’s why we are delighted to play our part in rolling out this exciting new innovative pilot for young people in Fife.” Says Natalie Smith, MCR Pathways’ Head of Schools for the East of Scotland.

“We work side by side with dynamic communities, and Local Authorities like Fife Council, to bridge the opportunity gap for young people through consistent, encouraging trusted adult relationships.  No two trusted adult relationships are the same, they are bespoke to each and every young persons’ needs.  These relationships empower young people to believe in themselves, value their own unique talents, build ambitions for their future careers – shaping their future fulfilling lives.  That way, confidence is built, self belief instilled, skills are developed and engagement in learning achieved.”

“Our extended partnership with MCR Pathways strengthens our shared commitment to ensuring every young person in Fife has someone in their corner who believes in them and supports them to plan their next steps towards a positive post‑school destination. says Nicola Masterson, Quality Improvement Officer DYW, Fife Education & Children Services Directorate.

When a volunteer gives even one hour a week, it sends a powerful message that a young person’s future matters and that their potential contribution to the workforce is valued. This support can be a critical turning point, helping young people build confidence, recognise their strengths and develop career aspirations that lead to real opportunities. We are extremely grateful to every volunteer who steps forward to make this important difference.”
