Matthew was referred to MCR as a care experienced young person presenting as quite low and lacking in confidence.
Matthew's Transformation
Matthew felt immature, wasn’t focused on his education, and experienced a significant spinal injury impacting his mental health. He was matched with Simon and was identified as a “great example of someone who has faced adversity and overcome it”.
Their shared experience immediately helped Matthew rebuild his confidence, providing support and advice
during his recovery. Matthew is now described as a “ confident, respectful and extremely driven young person” who is well respected by all. He successfully secured his first place choice in college and has completed his exams.
Simon, Matthew's Mentor
Simon provided not only emotional support during Matthews’ recovery but also academic advice on coursework and arranged a full work experience placement over the summer. This practical career support was critical in aiding Matthew to gain a college palace in his chosen field.
Simon’s support has gone beyond their weekly chat, extending to tangible career and academic assets that supported Matthews long term success.
We are deeply committed to protecting the identities of the young people MCR Pathways supports through the power of mentoring. That’s why we have changed names and used imagery that does not feature the individuals who shared their stories.
