Glasgow’s Young Talent Shines at Kelvingrove

Young Glasgow Talent’s Young Ambassadors treated mentors, volunteers and partners to some incredible performances at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

On 10th November, we unveiled our “Bridge to the Future” Community Exhibition at the Kelvingrove. It celebrates the commitment and diversity of our phenomenal volunteer mentors and inspiring young people. Encouraging more people in Glasgow to get involved. To truly fulfill our role as “the caring city”.

Shannon, our host and YGT Young Ambassador, summed the event up perfectly. She beautifully reflected the talent and character of our young people and the vital difference our mentors make.

“Young Glasgow Talent is centred around us young people. We are the next generation of parents, doctors, social workers, teachers, artists… and even world leaders! But most importantly, we are going to be the people who others will come to rely on. And when you are older, we won’t forget what you have done for us. My generation will hold out a hand to you, we will be a listening ear and we will take care of you”.

Glasgow Life hosted our opening event and exhibition in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Contributing a magnificent setting, fitting of the commitment of our young people and their mentors. The exhibition will remain in the Kelvingrove until the New Year. Please be sure to pay it a visit! Hear the inspiring stories of YGT mentors and how they engage with their young people. The everyday objects in this exhibition became a focus, an escape and helped forge a life-changing relationship.

As a YGT Pioneering Partner, Glasgow Life go above and beyond for our young people. Providing mentors and delivering Talent Taster opportunities. Opening the doors of some of the city’s finest venues. Exploring so many career opportunities. Now, they’re ensuring an incredible setting for our young people to have their inspiring voices heard!

“Glasgow Life is delighted to host and showcase this amazing exhibition. Demonstrating completely the passion, enthusiasm and commitment of the young people. It really celebrates the rich and life-affirming relationships mentors and the amazing young people MCR Pathways hold. It really does demonstrate that People Make Glasgow,” Dr. Bridget McConnell CBE, CEO of Glasgow Life.

Throughout the evening our young people delivered incredible performances. Sharing the difference their mentor has made to them and how they’re being supported to find, grow and use their talents. They dramatically presented the thoughts and feelings of a mentor and mentee as they meet for the first time. The perspective was completed by William’s interview of our mentors.

We were delighted to hear from an emotional Gerard M. Burns. A world renowned Scottish artist and graduate of Glasgow School of Art, Burns is one of the country’s best known portrait artists. Heralded as one of the leading artists of the human condition, straddling the world of representational painting and the world of conceptual art. His “Bridge to the Future” painting, which he donated to YGT, is the focus of, and inspiration behind, the exhibition.

Young Glasgow artist, Wali Hall, was also there on the evening. To unveil his artwork, which depicts his interpretation of how YGT mentor relationships help open the door to opportunities across our great city.

Over 500 young people across the city are now getting the support they deserve. The 1000th volunteer has pledged to help our young people. Alongside Glasgow City Council, SECC, Wheatley Group and City Building, our incredible YGT Partner organisations have all committed to one simple ambition – that care experienced and disadvantaged young people have the same education outcomes, career opportunities and life chances as any other young person.

People Make Glasgow! So many are working so hard and going above and beyond. Transforming the life-chances of the young people in our city that most need our help.

We’ll showcase the success of our resilient YGT young people, our truly motivated YGT volunteer mentors, and committed partners. Together, transforming the life chances of so many young Glaswegians.

Please do share word of our “Bridge to the Future” exhibition with your friends, family and colleagues. It will remain in the Kelvingrove through to the new year. We want even more people to hear the inspiring stories behind the YGT programme.
