Confident Communications

Last month we launched MCR Pathways’ Language Guide to help communicate with greater confidence, clarity and consistency.

As we said at the time, it isn’t about rigid scripts or fixed rules.

It’s about giving everyone the confidence and flexibility to tell the MCR Pathways story in a way that feels authentic while remaining true to our shared mission.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll explore the key building blocks of effective communication through a series of practical, bite-sized guides that you can start using straight away.

We’ll begin with one of the most useful communication tools we have: the elevator pitch.

Whether you’re speaking to a policymaker, a potential mentor, a school partner, a funder, and so on.

Being able to explain MCR Pathways clearly and confidently can open the door to meaningful conversations and new opportunities.

Language Shapes Perception

Every conversation, presentation, email or social media post helps shape how people understand and engage with MCR Pathways.

The words we choose build perceptions.

They can inspire trust, create understanding, strengthen relationships and encourage people to get involved. Equally, they can unintentionally create confusion, reinforce misconceptions or make our work harder to understand.

That’s why clear, respectful and consistent language matters.

It enables all of us to communicate with confidence while ensuring our messages reflect our values, strengthen our reputation and support our mission.

Consistency doesn’t mean everyone says exactly the same thing. It means we all communicate the same core message in ways that feel natural, authentic and relevant to the audience in front of us.

The Foundation

Our elevator pitch provides a consistent starting point for communicating what MCR Pathways is and why our work matters.

Original Elevator Pitch

MCR Pathways is an award-winning mentoring programme delivered in schools, further education settings and communities. We connect young people with trusted adult volunteer mentors, providing consistent, relationship-based support that builds confidence, self-belief and ambition. Together, young people and mentors navigate unique challenges, helping ensure more young people progress into positive futures through further education, apprenticeships, training and employment.

This is our foundation.

Whenever we communicate about MCR Pathways, this core message remains consistent because who we are and what we do doesn’t change.

What does change is the audience.

Different audiences have different priorities, motivations and questions. By understanding those perspectives, we can place greater emphasis on the aspects of our work that will resonate most strongly, while remaining completely consistent with our values, positioning and strategic language.

Think of it as telling the same story through a different lens.

Example 1: Speaking to a Policymaker

Audience lens: Evidence, outcomes, prevention and social value.

MCR Pathways is an award-winning mentoring programme delivered in schools, further education settings and communities. We connect young people with trusted adult volunteer mentors, providing consistent, relationship-based support that builds confidence, self-belief and ambition. By helping young people overcome barriers and progress into further education, apprenticeships, training and employment, we’re improving individual life chances while contributing to educational attainment, employability and wider social and economic outcomes.

What’s changed?

We’ve retained the core description of MCR Pathways but shifted the emphasis from individual mentoring to the wider impact our work has on society. This audience wants to understand the evidence, outcomes and value that mentoring creates beyond the individual young person.

Example 2: Speaking to a Prospective Mentor

Audience lens: Making a difference through one hour a week.

MCR Pathways is an award-winning mentoring programme delivered in schools, further education settings and communities. We match young people with trusted adult volunteer mentors who give just one hour a week to listen, encourage and believe in them. Through a consistent relationship, mentors help build confidence, self-belief and ambition, supporting young people to overcome challenges and realise their potential. It’s a small commitment that can make a life-changing difference.

What’s changed?

The facts remain the same, but we’ve brought the mentor’s role to the forefront. We’ve introduced the one-hour commitment, described what mentors actually do and finished with the difference they can make. This answers the questions most prospective mentors are asking: Could I do this? and Would it really make a difference?

Example 3: Speaking to a Young Person

Audience lens: Trust, belonging and opportunity.

MCR Pathways is here to make sure every young person has someone in their corner. We connect young people with trusted adult mentors who are there to listen, support and encourage them, helping build confidence and explore future opportunities together. Whether you’re thinking about college, university, an apprenticeship, work or simply figuring out what’s next, your mentor is there to help you believe in yourself and your future.

What’s changed?

We’ve moved away from organisational language and focused on the young person’s experience. We don’t mention being “award-winning” because that isn’t what matters to a young person. Instead, we’ve emphasised trust, support, encouragement and having someone who believes in them.

Example 4: Speaking to a Prospective Colleague

Audience lens: Purpose, values and meaningful careers.

MCR Pathways is an award-winning mentoring programme helping young people unlock their potential through the power of trusted relationships. Working across schools, further education settings and communities, we connect young people with volunteer mentors who provide consistent support that builds confidence, self-belief and ambition. Joining MCR Pathways means becoming part of a values-led organisation committed to creating lasting change, where collaboration, integrity and putting young people first are at the heart of everything we do.

What’s changed?

Here we’ve emphasised organisational culture and purpose. While the description of our work remains consistent, we’ve highlighted the opportunity to be part of a values-led organisation where people are united by a shared mission to improve young people’s lives.

One thing we’d like you to remember

Every example you’ve just read is communicating the same MCR Pathways.

The organisation hasn’t changed.

Our mission hasn’t changed. Our values haven’t changed. Only the emphasis has changed.

That’s the purpose of audience-centred communication.

Rather than rewriting our story, we’re helping each audience see the part of it that matters most to them.

As you begin using the elevator pitch, ask yourself three simple questions:

  1. What’s my foundation? Start with the core MCR Pathways message.
  2. Who’s my audience? Consider what matters most to them.
  3. What should I emphasise? Bring forward the aspects of our work that will resonate most strongly, while remaining true to our language, values and mission.

One message. Strengthened foundations. Massive Collaborative Impact.
