YGT Young People Work to the Future at the Science Centre!

Young Glasgow Talent by MCR Pathways is all about encouraging and supporting disadvantaged young people to find, grow and use their talents and skills.

Over the last month, our young people with great potential and interest in STEM subjects (Science Technology Engineering Maths) have had an amazing time at the Glasgow Science Centre. Exploring the subjects and careers that await our inspiring youngsters.

As well as mentoring the young people in our city who need the vital benefits that having a volunteer mentor offers, MCR Pathways works with other amazing Glasgow organisations. To open the doors of every conceivable industry and to spark vital aspirations in secondary school pupils.

Thanks to the city’s Science Centre, YGT’s Glasgow schools have been exploring the STEM subjects and enjoying phenomenal hands-on experiences. Young people have been looking at the worlds of work that lie ahead and seeing how science impacts their every-day lives. All throughout December and January.

In groups of around 20 pupils, S1 and S2 young people were getting stuck into everything from Cryptography to DNA Extraction. With cryptography, they were super-secret spies for the day. Cracking codes and learning more about encryption. Pupils had an amazing insight into jobs in cyber security by encrypting and decrypting information using both basic and sophisticated methods. The DNA workshop allowed our pupils to extract and observe two strands of their own DNA using specialised lab equipment. Seeing up close what it looked like and learning more from the incredible Science Centre team.

Using the My World of Work resource, their personalities traits and interests were explored in relation to careers. Many of the young people hadn’t heard of the jobs they were uncovering, so whole new sparks of ambition were being ignited. While the route to achieving them was considered further on the day.

They also had the opportunity to then explore the Glasgow Science Centre. Taking in some of the amazing science and technology gadgets and gizmos on offer.

Glasgow City Council recognises STEM subjects as integral to most of the key sectors for Glasgow’s economy. Supporting and encouraging pupils now, will mean they’ll be well equipped for these growth areas in the future.

Huge thanks to the Glasgow Science Centre for inspiring 188 YGT young people over the last few weeks. They’ve returned to school excited by their new adventures, ready to work hard towards the new opportunities that have opened up.

We have so many more inspiring young people signing up for MCR Pathway’s help. They need mentors to make a huge difference to their confidence, educational outcomes and future life chances. Can you help them? Find out more about becoming a mentor.

Can your organisation help? To become involved in our Talent Taster programme, alongside our partners such as City Building, The Herald and Wheatley Group, get involved.

We’re always looking for new mentors to reach all the new young people who are coming on board with the programme. Help us spread the word by letting your friends and family know how worthwhile mentoring can be!
