YGT Schools Support #HelpingHands

#HelpingHands is the latest campaign by Young Glasgow Talent. As we aim to inspire 1000 more Glaswegians, and more organisations, to support our city’s most deserving young people.

Throughout our December campaign, we’ll share incredible stories of the resilient young people, motivated mentors and committed organisations that make Glasgow. Who hold out their #HelpingHands. Who go above and beyond for those in our city that desperately need support. Who are encouraging you to join them!

Can You Offer a Helping Hand?

Today, we’ll hear from some of YGT’s schools. As our programme expands city wide, YGT now supports young people across 15 of the city’s secondaries. An additional 5 schools came on board over summer 2016. It’s all thanks to our young people and volunteer mentors for building the programme’s success that All Saints Secondary, Hillpark Secondary, Knightswood Secondary, Rosshall Academy and Whitehill Secondary schools all wanted to ensure their young people also get the YGT guidance they deserve.

Over the next three years, the Young Glasgow Talent mentoring programme will be embedded across all of the city’s schools. Thanks to one of the country’s biggest Public and Social Partnership agreements, which Glasgow City Council signed in August 2016.

Our schools have been phenomenal. Supporting Young Glasgow Talent as we offer our #HelpingHands to those young people that utterly deserve our city’s encouragement.

Have a look at what Saint Roch’s Secondary had to say. Their fantastic Head-Teacher, Stephen Stone, and Deputy Head-Teacher, Tommy Donnelly, talk about the impact YGT’s mentoring has had for their school’s young people, since joining us in 2014.

We were also delighted to catch up with Kay Dingwall, the Head-Teacher of Knightswood Secondary. One of YGT’s newest schools, Knightswood share their aspirations in welcoming mentors into their school, supporting their young people.

Whitehill Secondary, another of our schools, was also delighted to share the benefits that YGT’s #HelpingHands will mean for their pupils:

“As a school we are always striving to break down any potential barriers to learning and working in partnership with MCR pathways will continue to support our young people in reaching their maximum potential. We envisage that the mentoring component of the programme will engage our most vulnerable young people as this support will provide a consistent input from a trusted adult where the young person can share their experiences and aspirations.”

– Pauline Swan, Head Teacher at Whitehill Secondary School.

There are so many more young people within YGT schools, and within those schools we’ll reach soon, who are asking for our help. They need more #HelpingHands. Someone who will simply meet with them for one hour a week. Who will provide the consistency and support they need. We’ve shown that having a mentor absolutely improves attainment, staying-on rates and positive destinations reached for young people.

We need 1000 more Glaswegians to offer their #HelpingHands. For those in our city that desperately need our help. You’ll make a life-changing difference. Get Involved.

Can your organisation help? As well as individual mentors, we need Glasgow businesses, large and small, to provide a helping hand to our young people. Can you join YGT Partners including The Herald, Wheatley Group, University of Strathclyde and more, to provide mentors and/or Talent Tasters. We can’t wait to work with you to offer our city’s most disadvantaged a gateway to an expanding menu of opportunities and tasters of employment, college and university. Get Involved.
