YGT Hits Snow Camp For Summer!

This summer 19 of Young Glasgow Talent’s mentored young people took part in a two day course at Snow-Camp Scotland. YGT supports our young people all year round. During the academic year when meeting their mentors, and during the holidays to continue to build on the positive pathways they’re creating for themselves. Part of this means holding new, challenging and exciting opportunities during their time off. Aimed at engaging and inspiring young people, just as their mentors do during term time!

Building confidence is so important to help young people find, grow and use their talents. It gives them the courage to follow their dreams. That’s why skiing and snowboarding are the perfect new and dynamic challenges to encourage self belief. Snow-Camp Scotland were so enthusiastic to help our young people get the absolute most out of the experience. They were able to choose if they wanted to try out skiing or snowboarding, and were given first class lessons to master their new found talents!

Meet Elizabeth. YGT’s Pathways Coordinator in Smithycroft Secondary School, she was there for the two day Snow Camp experience. She emphasised the impact of this opportunity on the young people:

“After experiencing what Snow Camp had to offer, my young people are very keen to try and get the funding to do the next level. An amazing sign that they really enjoyed the experience and have found something that they’d like to continue to pursue. The young people learned new skills in something they generally wouldn’t get the chance to learn. They also learned key skills that will help them in the world of work, thanks to some workshops at the end of their training. They were challenged to work outside of their comfort zone throughout the two days, starting with working in groups. They were in groups with people they didn’t know, learning new skills on the slopes. All the young people who came along did great and tried everything that was thrown at them.”

We were also lucky enough to hear from one of the young people from Smithycroft Secondary who took part in the experience as well:

“We started our day off by meeting the instructor, Will. We got to pick if we wanted to do skiing or snowboarding and once we picked what we wanted to do they showed us the boots, boards and ski jets. We learned how to go up and down the hill on snowboards. When I was doing snowboarding I felt excited, nervous and cold at the start but warm at the end. I thought snowboarding was going to be just standing on a board and going down hill, but it was totally different! At the end of the day we were talking about our skills that we had learned.

The best part of the experience of Snow Camp was getting out on the snow. I would recommend Snow Camp to anyone that wants to learn how to do snow sports. I say just go for it, it is really good fun!!!!!!”

A huge thanks to Snow Camp for encouraging our fearless young people to take on exciting new challenges!
