Weegie Heroes Return to School and Celebrate Exams Success!

This summer, we’re celebrating our inspirational Young Glasgow Talent team! Our Weegie Heroes! It’s been amazing to hear of the success stories from our mentors, staff, and young people throughout the campaign so far. Today is particularly special, as we celebrate all of our young people! After sitting their exams, the results are now in and their next pathway steps underway. Working hard and believing in themselves, despite difficult circumstances, is something to truly be applauded! Well done to all of Young Glasgow Talent’s young people for a phenomenal academic year!

The impact a mentor has in boosting confidence, aspirations (and results!) is fantastic. With the support of Glasgow City Council, Young Glasgow Talent is expanding to reach even more young people than ever before. Our programme will be delivered across 5 new schools by the end of October. New young people, their mentors and all of the YGT team will build on the amazing success we’ve had so far. Supporting those young people in our city that desperately need our help most. Can you help more of our young heroes work towards a positive pathway?

Our young people performed brilliantly over the last year. During study preparations and delivering on exam day. We’re delighted to celebrate Karen’s story. She really is a #weegiehero. To show just how hard she worked for her fantastic results, we’ve been speaking with her mentor, Marie and Emma, the Pathways Coordinator at Karen’s school.

Marie, has been a phenomenal YGT mentor. Encouraging her young person consistently. Meeting weekly to discuss any problems Karen may have. Participating in YGT’s training and using the resources to empower her young person to a better future:

“I am so in awe of my mentee, not just for being such a talented, fun, kind soul, but for putting in loads of work and dedicated commitment to do her best every day of the year. She just got fab exam results of As and Bs from her last few years work. Well done her!”

Emma, the Pathways Coordinator at Karen’s school, Lochend Secondary School, also recognised the hard work of the young person she supports.

“This young person deserves every ounce of the successful exam results! Karen is very hard working, motivated and driven. She takes pride in doing well and strives to be the best she can be. She enjoys getting stuck in to all activities and always goes out her way to get others involved. She is one of the MCR ambassadors for Lochend and always puts 100% effort into tasks. She took part in her Duke of Edinburgh Award, and flourished in the physical elements, offering many amazing ideas to the planning of the award. She is an all round amazing young girl who no doubt will go far and do incredible things.”

Karen herself, was delighted to have done so well:

“When it came to my exam results I wasn’t really nervous until the night before and found it hard to sleep, when the postman came the next day I was just expecting to open it and be disappointed. I opened the results and I thought to myself that can’t be right but it was! I got 3 As including in music and drama and 2 Bs in English and maths. If it wasn’t for people like my Dad and my mentor Marie, I don’t think I would have got that result. I wouldn’t have been confident in myself enough to try my hardest.”

As you can see, the amazing support from her Pathways Coordinator, her Dad and her mentor has made a huge difference to Karen, as she begins her 5th year of secondary school. These nurturing and trusting relationships, have given her the confidence to try and succeed! It’s what we live for here at YGT and we couldn’t be prouder. It’s yet another testament to the transformative impact mentoring can have. Mentoring really is THE difference for these young people’s self-belief and success.

We have many more young people signing up for Young Glasgow Talent’s help. Young people, such as those that took part in this expedition. They need mentors to make a huge difference to their confidence, educational outcomes and future life chances. They need support and motivation to pursue their ambitions and take on such new experiences. Can you help them? You’ll guide disadvantaged, but utterly deserving young people through their education.
