Steve's Story

Steve has built a strong bond with his young person over the past 12 months and has never missed a session. Their meetings start with football predictions before diving into meaningful conversations. Initially hesitant to discuss school, his mentee is now more focused on GCSEs and eager to improve. Steve finds mentoring incredibly rewarding, saying their friendship and trust grow each week. Beyond mentoring, he actively supports MCR Pathways events across Surrey, sharing his experience on radio and with local organisations

Steve has been mentoring his young person for 12 months, and they’ve never missed a meeting!

Steve’s relationship with his young person grows stronger every time they meet. They start each session with football predictions before chatting about various topics. When they first met, his young person wasn’t keen on discussing GCSEs, but now he’s much more focused on school and shares his exam results. Steve says he’s eager to improve in subjects he finds more challenging.

Steve speaks proudly about his mentee. He says his young person introduces him to friends around school, and Steve himself can’t stop telling his own friends about mentoring!

Steve says the matching process has been fantastic. “We are so alike, not just in interests, but in character too. There’s always the opportunity to have a laugh, and what’s better than that?”

We asked Steve what the best thing about mentoring was. Here’s what he said:
“Ultimately, although I feel valued and like I make a difference to my young person every week, what matters most is how they feel. He looks forward to our time together, which shows in his great attendance and happy engagement with me. Each week, our friendship and trust grow, and now we can laugh and banter like lifelong friends. I can feel the difference our time together makes for both of us, and it’s so rewarding. I always reflect on our conversations and plan things to talk about next time.

I know that whatever we’ve said and done, it’s a positive experience for both of us. It’s so fulfilling, and he’s never missed a meeting! The professionalism of MCR Pathways and the school is outstanding. What motivates me to continue isn’t just my young person, but the organisation and the idea that I’m supporting something bigger than myself.”

But Steve doesn’t stop there. He goes above and beyond, offering his support at events across Surrey. He has spoken on Surrey Hills Community Radio and will be supporting us at Dorking Wanderers Football Club. He’s also speaking to Surrey Fire Brigade about all things mentoring.

Thank you, Steve! We look forward to hearing about what’s next for you and your young person.
