Mentors & Partners Recognised With People Make Glasgow Award

“We were absolutely delighted to win the prestigious People Make Glasgow award. It’s a fitting testament to the huge number of committed people involved as we approach 10 years of MCR. 10 years of supporting Glasgow’s most vulnerable young people. 10 years of dedicated, inspiring Glaswegians giving so much to help those that need it. Volunteer mentors from across Glasgow, of all ages and walks of life and committed partners and staff who spark vital aspirations through inspiration. Those who make and experience a life changing difference. This is fantastic recognition for every single person involved and with it our heartfelt thanks” Iain MacRitchie, MCR Founder and CEO.

The Herald and Glasgow Chamber of Commerce hosted this year’s Inspiring City Awards, celebrating and rewarding the people and organisations that make Glasgow great! Awards that recognise those who make a tremendous contribution to the cultural and economic climate of Glasgow.

MCR were presented with the People Make Glasgow award, which recognises those individuals or businesses that have – gone the extra mile to make a genuine difference to the lives of people in the city; or have made a significant and positive contribution to enhancing Glasgow’s reputation.

For ten years, our Young Glasgow Talent programme has been transforming the education outcomes, career opportunities and life chances of our city’s care experienced young people. In July, Glasgow City Council published its MCR Impact Report. It shows the phenomenal difference volunteer mentors and partner organisations make. 64% of our young people stay at school beyond 4th year, compared to 27% of Scotland’s care experienced youngsters. While 82% progress to college, university or employment when they’re ready to leave school. Compared to 57% across the country. When we started it was 48%.

For a decade, MCR’s volunteer mentors, Glaswegians of all ages and walks of life, have been going that extra mile. Dedicating time and support every week to their young person. While our partner organisations have offered hands-on, inspiring experiences to young people to help them find, grow and use their talents.

To all the individuals and organisations who support MCR – Thank You! We can’t wait to transform even more young lives with you over the next ten years!

From August 2017, MCR’s programme is being rolled out to support every secondary school in the city. That means many more young people are asking MCR for help. They need mentors to make a huge difference to their confidence, education outcomes and future life chances. Can you help them? You’ll guide disadvantaged, but utterly deserving and ambitious, young people through their education. Find out more about becoming a mentor.

Can your organisation help? To become involved in our Talent Taster programme, alongside our partners, simply GET INVOLVED!! We can’t wait to work with you to offer our city’s most needy a gateway to an expanding menu of opportunities and tasters of university, college and employment.

We’re always looking for new mentors to reach all the new young people who are coming on board with the programme. Help us spread the word by letting your friends and family know how worthwhile mentoring can be!
