Young People Express themselves @TedxYouthGlasgow

We were excited to take a group of our Young Ambassadors to yesterday’s TedxYouthGlasgow and it didn’t disappoint! After all, after having done such an amazing job leading our conference they’re now the experts?. The lineup for the day included some inspiring speakers and the chance to explore the interactive science and arts exhibits in the demo lab. So here’s our brief review!

The day’s theme was Open Mind and was hosted by Live at Five presenters Jennifer Reoch and David Farrell. Each of the day’s varied speakers asked the audience to consider topics from new perspectives and reconsider their views and actions. Subjects ranged from battling misconceptions about disability and illness to social media and technology, health and even mountaineering. A common link was the importance of living in the moment, getting outside your comfort zone, and challenging judgement and limitations.

The fab speakers included:

  • Christopher Andrews – Let’s Talk, Founder
  • Reece Hayes – Prince’s Trust, Young Ambassador
  • Hazel Wallace – The Food Medic
  • Kelly Knox – Model & Author
  • Dr Diahanne Rhiney – Psychologist & Founder of S.W.I.M.
  • Basit Rashid – Student
  • Adam Purvis – FutureX, Co-Founder
  • Natalie Loh – Student
  • Mollie Hughes – Mountaineer

Reece Hayes’ powerful speech about overcoming misconceptions of mental health and care-experience was a highlight of the day for us. He showed astounding bravery when discussing his mother’s struggles with mental health and his own battles with alcohol. His was a story which resonates with many. Reece came as a representative of The Prince’s Trust, an organisation that works with young people aged 11-30 helping them find employment and unlock their potential.

Big thanks from the MCR team to the hosts and all the speakers for organising this fab free event. We’re looking forward to coming back next year!

GiveAnHour

We’re working with more than 1300 young people each week through group work, mentoring and Talent Tasters! But there are still more than 800 pupils in Glasgow alone that are hoping for a mentor. Mentors build a trusting, caring relationship with their young people to help them build self confidence and accomplish their dreams. Can you become a mentor and work with one of our fab young people? When one person mentors, two lives are changed.
