“We very quickly saw the programme was going to work. This grew from an aspiration to a reality in a very short time,” Tommy Donnelly, Deputy Head Teacher, St Roch’s Secondary.
MCR’s Progress – A look at St. Roch’s
The General Teaching Council Scotland is the professional body for teaching in Scotland. It shapes the teaching profession, ensuring a high quality of education across the country.
With MCR’s Young Glasgow Talent programme now fully embedded across the secondary education system in Glasgow, GTCS visited one of our earliest partner schools, Saint Roch’s Secondary, to learn about the difference MCR is making to care experienced and disadvantaged young people in their school.
“News spread to other pupils and they started asking for mentors too. This grew from an aspiration to a reality in a very short time,” Tommy Donnelly, Deputy Head Teacher.
“This programme is a real extra arm to the support we can offer our pupils,” said head teacher Stephen Stone. “The young people are mee4ting mentors who actively want to be there for them.”

MCR’s progress has been felt all over the city but we still need help. We now support more than 1000 young people across Glasgow and each needs a mentor. Our young people are each unique and we need mentors from all backgrounds involved. Can you #GiveAnHour to become a mentor and help continue MCR’s progress? Can you support MCR in other ways? We’re also looking for volunteer support across a range of projects and activities. Here are our volunteering opportunities.
Can your organisation help? Join our Talent Taster programme, alongside our partners such as Glasgow Life and The Herald, and GET INVOLVED! We can’t wait to work with you and grow our expanding menu of opportunities and tasters to university, college and employment.
